Lemuel Ely Quigg
Lemuel Ely Quigg (1863-1919) was an American journalist, editor and politician. Born near Chestertown, Maryland, to a Methodist minister and schooled in the public schools of Wilmington, Delaware, he reached New York City in 1880 at seventeen, edited the Flushing Times in 1883 and 1884, then served on the editorial staff of the New York Tribune from 1884 to 1894 and as editor-in-chief of the New York Press in 1895. A special election seated him in Congress as a Republican in January 1894; he was reelected twice, served until March 1899, and chaired the New York Republican state conventions of 1896 and 1902. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1903, and practiced in New York City until his death.
