Lewis Nathaniel Chase worked across literary scholarship, drama, and moral philosophy. Emerson’s Essay on Compensation With an Introduction presents Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay together with Chase’s introductory guidance for readers. The University Press at Sewanee, Tennessee, issued the volume in 1906. Chase contributed the introduction, and his bibliography also includes The English Heroic Play and studies of literary ideals. His introduction frames Emerson’s argument that actions carry consequences and that apparent gains and losses belong to a wider balance. Chase was born in 1873 and died in 1937, and his surviving work shows him both introducing earlier writing and publishing scholarship in his own right.
