Marc Lamont Hill

Except for Palestine, written with Mitchell Plitnick and published by The New Press in February 2021, makes one argument at length: that American progressives who hold a consistent line on immigration, racial justice, gender and LGBTQ rights carve out an exception when the subject is Palestinian rights, and that the exception cannot be defended on their own premises. Plitnick has run the United States office of B'Tselem and co-directed Jewish Voice for Peace. Hill lost his CNN contributor contract in November 2018, hours after a speech at the United Nations calling for boycott and divestment that closed on a phrase critics read as a call for Israel to cease existing, and which he said meant nothing of the kind. Temple University, where he held an endowed chair, was pressed to discipline him and declined to. In August 2023 he moved to the CUNY Graduate Center as Presidential Professor of Anthropology and Urban Education.
