Margaret Powell entered domestic service in her youth and later transformed that experience into unusually direct social history. After leaving school at thirteen, she worked in a hotel laundry before becoming a kitchen maid and then a cook in private households. Below Stairs, first published in 1968, recounts the routines, hierarchies, and sharp divisions between employers and servants that structured that world. The memoir became an immediate success and helped inspire the television series Upstairs, Downstairs; it later found another audience among viewers interested in Downton Abbey. Powell followed it with Servants’ Hall, extending her account beyond the kitchen. Her plainspoken observations distinguish Below Stairs from nostalgic portraits of country-house life, preserving the labor, wit, ambitions, and limited choices of workers whose voices were seldom included in conventional household histories.
