Magda Szubanski

1961

Magda Szubanski is an Australian actor, comedian, and writer known for character comedy, television, and film as well as an acclaimed work of life writing. Reckoning: A Memoir follows her childhood in suburban Melbourne, the development of her comic career, her public life, and the difficult family history carried by her Polish father. Text Publishing released it in 2015, and Szubanski combines personal recollection with an investigation of wartime memory, identity, belonging, and the stories families keep from one another. Szubanski writes with the timing of a performer but gives the material emotional and historical weight. Her account also explains how school, friendship, family expectations, and creative collaboration shaped the person audiences later recognized from Fast Forward, Kath & Kim, and Babe. Reckoning: A Memoir received major Australian literary recognition, including Book of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards. The memoir extends Szubanski’s work beyond performance, showing a reflective writer testing memory against inherited history and her own changing understanding of family.
