Marita A. Hansen

Marita A. Hansen is a New Zealand writer whose connected fiction follows families and young people in South Auckland communities. Graffiti Heaven is an edgy coming-of-age novel set in 2000, ten years before Behind the Hood. It follows a multicultural group around the fictional community of Wera, with Ash Rata, Tiana, Levi, and Jenna among its central figures. Music, school, friendship, first relationships, bullying, and family instability shape the characters’ choices, while humor offsets the story’s harder social pressures. Hansen later linked these figures to the Behind the Lives and Broken Lives books, making Graffiti Heaven an early point in the internal chronology of the Rata stories even though it can stand alone. Her own account identifies Clendon Park and Manurewa as important models for the setting. That regional grounding gives the book a specific cultural frame rather than a generic school backdrop. Graffiti Heaven also established characters whose later appearances let Hansen revisit how adolescent experiences continue to influence their families and loyalties.
