Maxwell King built a career across journalism, editing, nonprofit leadership, and biography, joining public-interest reporting with cultural history. He held senior editorial posts at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette before leading the Heinz Endowments and the Pittsburgh Foundation. The Good Neighbor is his full-length biography of Fred Rogers, the creator and host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Abrams published the book in 2018, drawing on interviews, oral histories, and archival material to trace Rogers’s childhood, ministry, television practice, and thinking about children’s emotional lives. King had known Rogers, but his account also follows the professional choices behind the program, including its puppetry, music, patient pace, and resistance to commercial pressure. The biography places a familiar public figure inside the institutions and relationships that shaped his work. King later extended his interest in Rogers through collaborative writing, while The Good Neighbor remains the central book connecting his experience as an editor and civic leader to his work as a narrative biographer.
