The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire, subtitled The World of Dan and Phil, was written by Daniel Howell with Phil Lester and published by Ebury in October 2015, on the opening night of their stage tour. It went straight to number one on the New York Times list. Howell, from Wokingham in Berkshire and born in 1991, uploaded his first video in October 2009 under the channel name danisnotonfire, left a law course at Manchester in 2011, and presented a Sunday evening show on BBC Radio 1 with Lester from January 2013 until August 2014, work that won a Sony Golden Headphones Award. A second book with Lester, Dan and Phil Go Outside, appeared in 2016. In 2021 came a mental health guide, You Will Get Through This Night, written in consultation with the psychologist Heather Bolton. Howell came out as gay in 2019, and in October 2025 he and Lester confirmed they had been together since 2009.
