Michael E. Mann

Michael E. Mann connects climate research with public communication and policy. The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet argues that major fossil-fuel interests shifted from denying climate change outright to delaying collective action through distraction, division, and an emphasis on individual responsibility. PublicAffairs published the book in 2021. Mann is Presidential Distinguished Professor of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania and directs the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. His research covers climate variability, paleoclimate, extreme weather, and the effects of human-caused warming. He was a lead author for the climate-variability chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Third Assessment Report and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Mann also co-founded RealClimate and has written several books for general audiences, including The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, The Madhouse Effect, and Our Fragile Moment. The New Climate War sits at the intersection of his scientific work and his study of climate messaging.
