N D Falck was the abbreviated byline of Nikolai Detlef Falck, an eighteenth-century physician who addressed illness far from professional help. The Seaman’s Medical Instructor appeared in London in 1774 through Edward and Charles Dilly. Organized as lectures, it was intended for ships that carried no surgeon and used comparatively plain language to discuss anatomy, accidents, disease, medicines, dressings, and the contents of a shipboard medical box. Library records identify Falck as living from 1736 to 1783, while the original title page gives his medical qualification. The book belongs to an early tradition of practical maritime medicine, when long voyages, changing climates, limited supplies, and isolation made basic medical knowledge especially consequential. Its historical value now lies in documenting the hazards faced by sailors and the period’s understanding of treatment.
