Nathaniel Armstrong Wells was a nineteenth century British travel writer and illustrator whose best-known volume examines Spain through architecture, landscape, and historical memory. The Picturesque Antiquities of Spain appeared in London from Richard Bentley in 1846, arranged as a sequence of letters rather than a conventional guidebook. Wells moves through Burgos, Valladolid, Toledo, Seville, and other places, pairing observations about monuments with illustrations of buildings and city views. Its extended published title explains that the letters describe notable buildings and other remains of Spanish art. That structure gives the work a personal travel voice while preserving detailed attention to churches, palaces, streets, and regional customs. Wells supplied visual material as well as prose, making the volume both an illustrated record and a literary account of travel. The 437-page Bentley edition remains an important document of how British visitors encountered Spain’s built heritage during the 1840s.
