Nathaniel Shaler brought geology, natural history, and Harvard teaching into books written for specialist and general audiences. At Harvard he became professor of geology and dean of the Lawrence Scientific School, while his publications ranged across earth history, agriculture, society, and human relations with other species. Domesticated Animals began partly in essays prepared for Scribner’s Magazine and was issued by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1895. The book considers dogs, horses, flocks, herds, birds, and insects, asking how long association with people changed animal behaviour and contributed to civilization. Shaler combines observation with broad historical argument, moving from particular traits to the practical and ethical consequences of domestication. A contemporary Nature review noted the work’s accessible purpose and its attention to familiar animals rather than technical classification alone. Domesticated Animals thus reflects Shaler’s characteristic effort to connect natural history with everyday institutions, productive labour, and questions about human responsibility toward dependent creatures.
