Neil Evernden wrote environmental philosophy that questions the assumptions modern industrial societies make about nature and the human self. The Natural Alien examines why environmental concern can remain politically weak even when ecological damage is widely recognized. Drawing on phenomenology and cultural criticism, Evernden argues that treating the nonhuman world as an external collection of resources also narrows how people understand their own place within it. University of Toronto Press published the original study in 1985, followed by a 1993 second edition containing a new preface and an epilogue on sustainable development. Its full title is The Natural Alien: Humankind and Environment. Evernden taught environmental studies at York University in Ontario and also wrote The Social Creation of Nature. Rather than offering a checklist of technical remedies, The Natural Alien asks readers to examine language, perception, and inherited ideas of progress. That philosophical emphasis keeps the book relevant to debates about environmentalism’s cultural foundations alongside its practical aims.
