P. Djeli Clark
P. Djèlí Clark is the name Dexter Gabriel publishes fiction under; he is a historian at UConn whose academic work covers slavery and emancipation in the Caribbean and the United States. A Master of Djinn is set in an alternate Cairo in 1912, where djinn returned to the world in the 1870s and Egypt threw the British out as a result, and where a woman detective in a bowler hat investigates the killing of an entire secret society. The Black God's Drums does something comparable in a New Orleans that never rejoined the Union.
