Paul Claudel was a French poet, dramatist, and diplomat whose theatre joined Catholic conviction with conflicts of family, history, and political authority. The Hostage is the English title of L’Otage, a three-act prose drama first published in 1911 and first staged in Paris in 1914. Set against the upheavals surrounding the French Revolution and its aftermath, it became the opening work in Claudel’s Coûfontaine trilogy, followed by Le Pain dur and Le Père humilié. The play centres on Sygne de Coûfontaine and a coercive bargain involving family inheritance, loyalty, and the captive pope, making personal sacrifice inseparable from public crisis. Claudel’s diplomatic service took him to posts in Europe, Asia, and the Americas while he continued writing poetry and drama. The Bibliothèque nationale de France classifies L’Otage as a historical drama and records its publication and performance history. Its later international productions helped establish Claudel’s demanding religious theatre beyond France and demonstrate the close connection between his dramatic imagination and his experience of statecraft.
