Paul de la Gironière was a French physician, planter, and memoirist whose long residence in the Philippines shaped his best-known book. Adventures in the Philippine Islands recounts his arrival in Manila, medical practice, establishment of the Jala Jala estate, and travel through different parts of the archipelago. In 1854, readers received an English translation that also circulated under the title Twenty Years in the Philippines. Gironière writes as a nineteenth-century European observer, so his descriptions carry the assumptions and limitations of that position, but the narrative remains a substantial period portrayal of travel, colonial society, natural history, and daily life.
