Peter Krass
1963
Carnegie runs to some six hundred pages and declines to choose between the man who gave away three hundred million dollars and the employer whose Homestead works met a strike in 1892 with Pinkerton agents and left men dead on both sides. Peter Krass published it with John Wiley in 2002, working from the letters rather than the autobiography, which he treats as a document Carnegie shaped on purpose. Krass has also written a life of Jack Daniel and a study of what happened to Americans who came into sudden money.
