Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist who built the largest steel enterprise in the United States and became one of the wealthiest men of his era. After selling Carnegie Steel in 1901, he turned to philanthropy and writing, funding thousands of public libraries and endowing institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. He is remembered for his essay "The Gospel of Wealth" and for books on business, self-improvement, and the lives of men he admired.
