Quiara Alegría Hudes

1977

Quiara Alegría Hudes is a playwright, memoirist, and novelist whose work often joins music, family history, and Philadelphia life. My Broken Language follows her search for an artistic voice amid English, Spanish, inherited stories, and the expressive life of her Puerto Rican family. One World published the memoir in 2021, and it was later chosen for Philadelphia's citywide One Book program. Hudes won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Water by the Spoonful and wrote the book for the stage musical In the Heights, which she also adapted for film. Those theatrical roots matter to the memoir: rhythm, speech, silence, and performance become ways to understand both creative formation and belonging. Her official bibliography places the book alongside plays and later fiction rather than treating it as an isolated departure.
