Renate Dorrestein

Renate Dorrestein was a Dutch novelist, journalist, and feminist writer known for combining domestic realism with suspense, dark humor, and psychologically charged family stories. Een hart van steen, first published by Contact in 1998, follows Ellen van Bemmel as she returns to her childhood home while pregnant and confronts the catastrophe that shattered her family twenty-five years earlier. The novel moves between later recollection and childhood experience, gradually revealing how memory, guilt, and incomplete knowledge shape Ellen’s account. It was translated into several languages under titles including A Heart of Stone and became one of Dorrestein’s internationally recognized books. Her wider fiction includes Verborgen gebreken, Zonder genade, and Het duister dat ons scheidt, works that repeatedly examine families under pressure and the unstable boundary between care and harm. In Een hart van steen, the puzzle-like structure makes Ellen’s effort to understand the past inseparable from her attempt to imagine a different future.
