The novel moves between later recollection and childhood experience, gradually revealing how memory, guilt, and incomplete knowledge shape Ellen’s account. It was translated into several languages under titles including A Heart of Stone and became one of Dorrestein’s internationally recognized books. Her wider fiction includes Verborgen gebreken, Zonder genade, and Het duister dat ons scheidt, works that repeatedly examine families under pressure and the unstable boundary between care and harm.
