The British performer is widely recognized for playing Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd and has directed the feature films Submarine and The Double. Ayoade on Ayoade extends his comic method to a mock career study structured as interviews in which the author questions an exaggerated version of himself. Faber published the book in 2014 as Ayoade on Ayoade: A Cinematic Odyssey. Its self-interview format parodies directors' memoirs, critical profiles, and the grand claims that can surround film culture. Ayoade later wrote The Grip of Film and Ayoade on Top, continuing the same interest in cinema, criticism, and unreliable authority while changing the object of the joke.
