The Roommate pairs a woman from old East Coast money, who has just moved across the country for a man who immediately goes on tour, with the housemate she did not know she was getting, who turns out to work in adult film.

Danan writes the sex work without shame or redemption arc, which is the point of the book rather than a provocation, and the plot becomes about building an ethical company rather than about rescuing anyone.

The Intimacy Experiment followed, with a rabbi and a sex educator, and is the better novel.
