Samuel A. Floyd Jr. shaped modern Black music scholarship as an educator, historian, and institutional builder. The Power of Black Music traces continuities linking African music, myth, and ritual with spirituals, blues, concert music, jazz, and later American forms. Oxford University Press issued the study in 1995, and its chapters develop a critical method grounded in musical structures and practices, including call and response and Signifyin(g). Floyd founded the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago in 1983 and earlier established the Institute for Research in Black American Music and the Black Music Research Journal at Fisk University. He also edited Black Music in the Harlem Renaissance and the International Dictionary of Black Composers. The Library of Congress identifies his scholarship as an inspiration for its African American music bibliography, reflecting how his work joined historical interpretation, archival development, and durable resources for future researchers. His model treated archives, critical interpretation, teaching, and publication as mutually supporting parts of a shared scholarly project across generations and scholarly fields.
