Wendy Fonarow is an anthropologist, writer, teacher, and music-industry professional whose research examines live performance and British independent music. Her fieldwork began in London, and her experience also includes work with record labels such as Domino, Reprise, and MCA. Empire of Dirt developed from sustained observation of performers, audiences, and industry workers in the indie scene. Wesleyan University Press published the study in 2006, later issuing an electronic edition in its Music/Culture series. The book maps different zones within concert audiences and considers how position, movement, affiliation, and access shape participation. Fonarow also distinguishes indie as a mode of distribution, a genre label, an ethos, and a critical judgment, showing why the term carries competing meanings. Its subtitle, The Aesthetics and Rituals of British Indie Music, states the ethnographic focus. Her analysis connects fan behavior with questions of authenticity, gender, emotion, professional status, and community.
