Sandy Gall was a British foreign correspondent, television newscaster, documentary maker, and author whose reporting career extended from Reuters to ITN. Afghanistan became a central subject after he traveled through the country to meet resistance commander Ahmad Shah Massoud in 1982. Afghan Napoleon: The Life of Ahmad Shah Massoud draws on Gall's encounters with Massoud, interviews with relatives and allies, and excerpts from the commander's diaries; Rory Stewart contributed the introduction. Haus Publishing issued the biography in 2021. Gall wrote several other books about Afghanistan and made documentaries on the Soviet occupation before his death in 2025 at the age of 97.
