Carlotta Gall is a British foreign correspondent for The New York Times and the daughter of the Scottish reporter Sandy Gall. She began in the 1990s at The Moscow Times, covering the first Chechen conflict, then reported from Baku for the Financial Times and The Economist and from the Balkans for the paper she is still with. She moved to Afghanistan in November 2001, weeks after the American bombing began, and stayed until 2013. She was afterwards North Africa correspondent in Tunis, then bureau chief in Istanbul, and has more recently covered Ukraine. The Wrong Enemy, published in 2014, draws on those years in the country. Its argument is that the effort was pointed at the wrong place: the Taliban endured, Gall writes, because Pakistan's government and its intelligence service sheltered and supplied it.
