Slash played the guitar parts that made Appetite for Destruction the best-selling debut album in American history, and left Guns N' Roses in 1996 after years of deterioration inside the band. His autobiography covers the addiction, the arrests, the several occasions on which he was declared clinically dead, and a 2001 diagnosis of congestive heart failure that came with a prognosis of weeks; he had a defibrillator fitted and has been sober for years. He was born in England to an artist mother who designed for David Bowie, and grew up in Los Angeles.
