Sveistrup created Forbrydelsen, the Danish crime series shown abroad as The Killing, which ran three seasons and turned a patterned jumper into television shorthand for a detective. It was remade for American television and helped turn subtitled Nordic crime drama into a British and American habit. He studied literature and taught screenwriting beforehand, and had already written the family drama Nikolaj og Julie. His first novel, The Chestnut Man, arrived in 2018 and turns on small figures made of conkers left beside the bodies of women in Copenhagen. Netflix filmed it as a series.
