Stephen Morrell Griswold spent decades as a businessman and member of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, recording his memories of the congregation and its celebrated pastor Henry Ward Beecher. Sixty years with Plymouth Church, published in 1907, grew from more than half a century of participation, including fifty-three years as an usher. Griswold arrived in New York in 1851 and soon joined the church, whose preaching, music, social welcome, and public engagement differed sharply from his earlier religious experience. His book describes services, prominent members, abolitionist activity, Beecher’s visit to England, the Beecher-Tilton trial, church staff, excursions, and changing congregational life. Rather than presenting a detached institutional chronicle, he arranged personal sketches around events he had witnessed. The memoir therefore preserves both public controversies and ordinary practices such as seating, worship, and volunteer service. Sixty years with Plymouth Church is especially valuable as an insider’s account of a nationally influential nineteenth-century congregation viewed across several generations.
