Steven Lovatt
Steven Lovatt is a writer, teacher, editor, and critic based in Swansea whose nonfiction brings literary attention to everyday environments. Birdsong in a Time of Silence began with the sudden quiet of Britain's first 2020 lockdown, when reduced traffic and industry made spring birds newly audible to many listeners. Lovatt moves from close descriptions of blackbirds and other familiar species to the science of song, nest-site choices, territorial calls, and the meanings people have attached to avian sound. The 2021 Particular Books edition preceded later Penguin issues. It is neither only a field guide nor simply a lockdown journal. Its central argument grows through listening: human history and natural history cannot be separated, and renewed attention can reveal both delight and ecological loss. Lovatt's later Enchanted Ground continues his interest in place and belonging, but Birdsong in a Time of Silence captures the specific moment when widespread interruption changed what ordinary streets and gardens seemed to contain.
