Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban was published in May 2011 and rested on years of contacts inside both organisations that no other reporter had built. Days after it appeared, Shahzad published a piece on al-Qaeda infiltration of the Pakistani navy. He was abducted in Islamabad and his body was recovered two days later bearing marks of severe violence. A judicial commission failed to identify anyone. Human Rights Watch and his own colleagues pointed at the ISI, which denied it, and nobody has ever been charged. He had told colleagues he was being threatened and asked that this be made public if anything happened to him. He was forty.
