Tom Ellen
1984
Tom Ellen writes for the British comic magazine Viz, alongside journalism for Cosmopolitan, Empire, ShortList, NME and the Evening Standard Magazine. His fiction started as a partnership. He and Lucy Ivison had been at school together in London and dated for two years; they stayed friends after breaking up at university and began writing young adult novels jointly in 2012. That produced Lobsters, shortlisted for the inaugural YA Book Prize run by The Bookseller, then Never Evers and Freshers. All About Us, published by HQ at HarperCollins in October 2020, was his first book written alone and his first for adult readers. Its narrator Ben is drifting through December with his relationship to Daphne fraying when an old friend, Alice, gets back in touch, and a strange watch drops him back into December 2005 to look again at the choice he made there.
