William Hathorn Mills

William Hathorn Mills worked as an English-language translator of Latin verse, introducing Horace through compact, rhymed versions intended to stand as poems in their own right. Nineteen Odes of Horace appeared in 1920 from Barnum & Flagg Company in San Bernardino, California. The volume presents a selected group rather than the whole four-book collection of Horatian odes, and surviving records describe a short edition of roughly three dozen pages. Mills later produced a larger 1921 volume titled The Odes of Horace, published by Lederer, Street & Zeus, which placed his translations in a more extensive setting. Bibliographic databases sometimes list Horace alone as author, but Mills is the English translator responsible for this edition’s wording. His choices belong to a long tradition of adapting Horace’s varied meters, public themes, friendship poems, and reflective lyrics for new audiences. Because modern reprints reproduce the historical text under different imprints, the original date and translation credit are essential for distinguishing Mills’s work from newer collaborative versions of Horace.
