Yoon Ha Lee builds science fiction and fantasy from mathematics, strategy, Korean cultural references, and experiments with form. Combustion Hour is a 2014 story originally published by Tor.com, now Reactor, with artwork by Jeffrey Alan Love and editing by Patrick Nielsen Hayden. Lee frames the narrative as the eschatology of shadow puppets, using an artificial stage, ritual roles, and sharply limited colors to explore duty and consequence. The story's compressed, image-driven structure shows the formal range that also appears in the collection Conservation of Shadows. Recognition expanded through the Machineries of Empire trilogy, beginning with Ninefox Gambit, and younger-reader novels including Dragon Pearl. Ninefox Gambit won the Locus Award for best first novel, while Dragon Pearl received the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for children's literature. Lee studied mathematics and has worked as an analyst and teacher. Combustion Hour offers an early, concentrated example of how he turns abstract systems into emotionally charged worlds without requiring the scale of a novel sequence.
