About this book
Cold nights, shared blankets and makeshift log huts give R. E. McBride's account of the American Civil War its practical detail. Writing from his experience as a private in the Army of the Potomac, he recalls the war from the Wilderness to Appomattox Court House. His attention falls on comrades, marches and camp life, alongside the fighting. The Pennsylvania regiments numbered 190 and 191 are central to the record he wants to preserve.
McBride explains that he relied chiefly on memory after losing his diary, using written histories to help establish dates. He also distinguishes his own experiences from stories heard from other soldiers. The account began as a recollection for his family and became an effort to secure recognition for his regiment's service. For readers interested in how soldiers lived, the descriptions of bedding, drainage, fireplaces and improvised furniture make the demands of military life unusually concrete.
