About this book
The description of Pont Sidi Rached at Constantine, Algeria, gives its building dates as 1908-1912 and the span of its great arch as 70 metres. The account of Pont Sidi Rached says that the work was inspired partly by Roman aqueducts and partly by the two famous bridges over the Tech at Céret, in France. The account describes a bridge with many spans and a little street of frail shops, including cabins with gabled roofs unequal in size.
The account describes piers made of deodar logs piled in a criss-cross manner, with each succeeding row longer than the one beneath it. The projecting logs form an arched shape whose outline is flattened by the long bearing beams of the roadway. The discussion of the Valentré at Cahors describes five vast piers rising from the river-bed and says the architect scorned the aid of relief bays.
