About this book
Great size brings both power and embarrassment to the figures gathered by Henry Wysham Lanier. This collection traces giants through ancient myth, tales of knights, nursery stories and accounts of unusually tall people. Its opening section includes Zeus, Thor and Polyphemus, while later chapters draw on Irish, Norse, Serbian, Japanese, Korean and North American traditions. Lanier's introduction takes a humorous view of the giants, noting how smaller opponents repeatedly challenge their strength.
The section on knights gives physical contests a place beside personal troubles. Yvain leaves his wife to seek further adventures, promises to return by an agreed day and forgets that promise as his successes accumulate. Her response sends him into distress, shifting attention from heroic achievement to its consequences. The final chapters consider real giants and scientific explanations. Readers interested in folklore can follow how stories from different places use extraordinary size to explore pride, courage and cleverness.
