About this book

A missed royal hunt leads Prince Geraint away from Queen Guinevere and into a town preparing for a tournament. Seeking shelter in a partly ruined castle, he meets Earl Yniol and his daughter Enid, whose singing changes the mood of the gloomy house. This opening gives young readers a close view of the courtesy, pride and sudden challenges that shape life around King Arthur's court.

Mary Macgregor's 1905 collection presents six Arthurian stories in simple prose, drawing chiefly on Sir Thomas Malory. Alongside Geraint and Enid are tales of Lancelot and Elaine, Gareth and Lynette, and Sir Galahad. In the story of Pelleas, a knight's vows restrain his anger after betrayal, while the Lady of the Lake brings enchantment into his troubles. Short scenes and direct dialogue make these old legends approachable for children, with affection, loyalty and the duties of knighthood running through the adventures.
