About this book

A warrior crossing a bridge at Lake Biwa finds a dragon stretched across his path. His courage draws him into the troubles of an underwater household, where a giant centipede threatens the Dragon King's family. This opening sets the pattern for Yei Theodora Ozaki's collection: familiar human choices unfold in a world where animals speak, monsters appear and ordinary places conceal unexpected wonders.

The tales range from fishermen and princes to a moon child and a monkey seeking help from a wise boar. Ozaki's preface explains that she adapts Japanese sources for young English readers, adding descriptions and sometimes combining incidents from different versions. Alongside courage and resourcefulness, the excerpts raise questions of kindness toward vulnerable creatures. Readers interested in fairy tales can compare the varied encounters, while the named lakes, local customs and scenes of palace life give these stories a setting of their own.
