About this book
Ethel Mairet wrote A Book on Vegetable Dyes. The text says handicraft workers should make their own colours, and that leather workers should dye their own leather. The text says that as a tradition the art of dyeing is practically dead in Britain, and is threatened with gradual extinction all over the world.
A recipe for Green Black for Wool says to mordant wool with 3% Bichromate of Potash and 1% Sulphuric acid for 1 to 1½ hours, then wash and dye with 35% to 50% of Logwood. A recipe for Logwood Blue for Wool uses 4% alum and 4 to 5% cream of Tartar for the mordant. An index lists, among others, Oak bark, Oak galls and Oil of Vitriol.
