About this book
Vegetable Dyes is a book of recipes and other information useful to the dyer, by Ethel M. Mairet. The contents list chapters on Wool, Silk, Cotton and Linen, Mordants, British Dye Plants and The Lichen Dyes, among others. The text says there are two kinds of silk, raw silk and waste silk or spun silk, and that raw silk is that directly taken from the cocoons.
One method of dyeing wool is to mordant it, then dye it, then mordant it again, which the text says is adopted to ensure an extremely fast colour. Fustic is the wood of Morus tinctoria, a tree of Central America, used principally for wool. With alum, Old Fustic gives yellow, inclining to lemon yellow, and with Bichromate of Potash as mordant it gives old gold colour.
