About this book
A generous mother and a father devoted to books stand at the heart of Laurence Hutton's memories of childhood. Written about himself as a boy in the third person, these sketches move between family portraits, New York streets and summer visits beside the Hudson River. Walks among the docks introduce a father who talks with sailors in their own languages and encourages his son to think through questions.
Childhood play supplies some of the most particular scenes. A bed becomes the barge Mayflower, its moorings supplied by bedroom furniture, while a cat's funeral becomes an elaborate family ceremony. Hutton combines these incidents with an adult's affectionate reflections on the people who shaped him. The illustrated volume also contains accounts of four dogs, whose portraits appear among the family pictures. Its appeal lies in the small rituals, private inventions and familiar companions preserved in personal recollection.
