About this book

My Boyhood is by John Burroughs, with a conclusion by his son Julian Burroughs. The foreword says that in the beginning, at least, Father wrote these sketches of his boyhood and early farm life as a matter of self-defense. The writer says that from the earliest memory the cow was the chief factor on the farm and her products the main source of the family income, and that around her revolved the haying and the harvesting.

The writer describes the day of the scythe and the good mower, of the cradle and the good cradler, of the pitchfork and the good pitcher. The writer lists vanished customs: no more huskings or quiltings, or apple cuts, or raisings or bees of any sort. The writer recalls that as a boy the writer used to haunt dens and retreats where Indians and wild beasts often took refuge, especially on Sunday when young winter-green and black birch gave an excuse to go to the woods. The text gives the last letter from Slabsides, on May 23, 1900, which begins MY DEAR BOY and says the writer is here surrounded by the peace and sweetness of Slabsides.
