About this book

Uncle Teddy prides himself on understanding children, especially the two very different sons of his sister Lu. Daniel, twenty-two, is a shy student; Billy, eleven, resists arithmetic, speaks in slang and rushes into trouble. When Billy comes home bruised after rescuing a small dog from a group of boys, his mother sees another cause for worry. His uncle sees evidence that the boy deserves to be understood on his own terms.

Fitz Hugh Ludlow gives this comic family story an affectionate, talkative narrator whose opinions on upbringing lead into scenes of everyday misunderstanding. Later, Teddy advises Daniel about approaching the woman he admires, while Billy confides his own grand plans to marry. The contrast between the brothers makes room for both humor and sympathy. Readers interested in older ideas about childhood and family expectations will find those concerns worked out through lively conversations.
