About this book
Zeno Legge arrives in Dublin expecting sympathy from his uncle, the Cardinal Archbishop, but his restless moods soon test the household. A late visit follows an impromptu piano performance that has disturbed his fellow hotel guests. Bernard Shaw tells this short story through Zeno himself, whose sweeping claims about art, feeling and spiritual insight sit awkwardly beside the reactions of everyone around him.
At Four Mile Water, Zeno turns his attention to Kate Hickey, who answers his elaborate compliments with sharp remarks. His irritation at Langan, another visitor she welcomes, gives their exchanges a comic edge. The story brings religious authority, romantic disappointment and personal vanity into the same small social world. Readers interested in Shaw's dialogue can watch how a conversation exposes the distance between Zeno's view of himself and what other people actually hear.
