About this book

Before dawn in a prairie farmhouse, an alarm clock pulls two brothers toward another day of chores. Guy and Jim feed the stock and milk the cows while they discuss a question: what will Guy do next, with family ties and Faith weighing on his decision? This opening gives Will Lillibridge’s collection a firm grounding in physical work, close relationships, and the pressures of prairie life.

The stories range from farm routines to sharper confrontations. In one tense scene, Asa Arnold and Ichabod Maurice turn an accusation of lying into a dangerous contest governed by a burning candle. Domestic detail and wounded pride sit close together in these American short stories. Readers interested in frontier fiction can find both the textures of everyday labor and moments when anger threatens to overwhelm judgment. An introductory tribute also connects Lillibridge’s writing with his work, outdoor interests, and attachment to the prairies.
