About this book

A poker game at Mick Kennedy’s saloon opens onto a prairie world of hard riding, unpaid debts and dangerous tempers. Tom Blair, refused further credit, draws a weapon before the barkeeper forces him to back down. Published in 1905, Will Lillibridge’s Ben Blair presents frontier life through sharply described rooms, weather and physical encounters. The crowded saloon gives a close view of men whose confidence can quickly turn into desperation.

Across snowy river country, Ben directs the older Tom’s movements during a tense passage along the Bad River and Missouri. Their strained exchanges, the difficulty of following tracks and Tom’s eventual escort toward a courthouse place personal authority beside the workings of law. Readers interested in Western fiction will find a novel attentive to the practical details of travel and the pressure that distance, cold and stubbornness exert on its characters.
