About this book

At Haddo Court, a girls' school near London, generous grounds and comfortable rooms accompany firm rules and high expectations. Mrs. Haddo inherits a school run by successive generations of women, and her pupils admire her judgment and character. L. T. Meade places Betty Vivian within this carefully ordered community, where close friendships, teachers and a shared code of conduct shape everyday life. The opening introduces an upper-school circle whose ambitions reflect both their privileged upbringing and the school's moral ideals.

An incident at a hollow tree brings a different kind of test. Sibyl and several younger girls investigate a spot where Betty has been seen, while Martha tries to reconcile loyalty with growing doubts. Conversations about the group called the Specialities reveal how belonging can influence what pupils believe about one another.
