About this book

A new school year at Kingfield High School begins with an argument about how a girls' school ought to be run. Kathleen Wilcox wants more clubs and a livelier welcome, while Lesbia Ferrars defends the school she knows. Their headmistress, Miss Tatham, has returned from an educational conference with plans of her own. Angela Brazil's novel sets these competing expectations among cloakroom conversations, assemblies and the everyday concerns of English schoolgirls.

Lesbia's responsibilities also extend to teaching. At Tunbury she attempts a piano lesson with young Terry Stockton, whose jokes and wandering attention make explaining musical notes harder than she expects. Walks through fields, woodland games and a picnic give this episode its holiday setting. The book offers readers interested in school stories a close view of pupil loyalties, adult expectations and the small comic difficulties of learning to guide someone else.

About the author

Angela Brazil

Angela Brazil was one of the first British writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories", written from the characters' point of view and intended primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. In the first half of the 20th century she published nearly 50 books of girls' fiction, the vast majority being boarding school stories.
