A Calm Exposure of the Unfairness of the General Reply to Articles is a polemical pamphlet by James Beaven (1801-1875), the English-born Anglican clergyman who served as Professor of Theology at King’s College, Toronto and later at the University of Trinity College, Toronto. Beaven was one of the leading figures of the High Church Anglican tradition in nineteenth-century Upper Canada and was caught up in the controversies that ran through the colonial Church of England in Canada over the secularisation of King’s College and the relations between Anglicans and other Protestant denominations. The pamphlet answers an opposing pamphlet in the long Toronto religious press exchange of the 1840s and 1850s. The piece is a primary source for the ecclesiastical history of Victorian Ontario.
